چکیده

This paper investigates the rank distribution, cumulative probability, and probability density of price returns for the stocks traded in the KSE and the KOSDAQ market. This research demonstrates that the rank distribution is consistent approximately with the Zipf’s law with exponent α = −1.00 (KSE) and −1.31 (KOSDAQ), similar to that of stock prices traded on the TSE. In addition, the cumulative probability distribution follows a power law with scaling exponent β = −1.23 (KSE) and −1.45 (KOSDAQ). In particular, the evidence displays that the probability density of normalized price returns for two kinds of assets almost has the form of an exponential function, similar to the result in the TSE and the NYSE.

Power laws and market crashes Empirical laws on bursting bubbles

In this paper, we quantitatively investigate the statistical properties of a statistical ensemble of stock prices. We selected 1200 stocks traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and formed a statistical ensemble of daily stock prices for each trading day in the 3-year period from January 4, 1999 to December 28, 2001, corresponding to the period of the forming of the internet bubble in Japn, and it...

Data Analysis and Statistical Behaviors of Stock Market Fluctuations

In this paper, the data of Chinese stock markets is analyzed by the statistical methods and computer sciences. The fluctuations of stock prices and trade volumes are investigated by the method of Zipf plot, where Zipf plot technique is frequently used in physics science. In the first part of the present paper, the data of stocks prices and trade volumes in Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen S...

Zipf’s Law: A Microfoundation

Existing explanations of Zipf’s law (Pareto exponent approximately equal to 1) in size distributions require strong assumptions on growth rates or the minimum size. I show that Zipf’s law naturally arises in general equilibrium when individual units solve a homogeneous problem (e.g., homothetic preferences, constant-returns-to-scale technology), the units appear and disappear at a small constan...

Theory of Zipf’s Law and of General Power Law Distributions with Gibrat’s law of Proportional Growth

We summarize a book under publication with the above title written by the three present authors, on the theory of Zipf’s law, and more generally of power laws, driven by the mechanism of proportional growth. The preprint is available upon request from the authors. For clarity, consistence of language and conciseness, we discuss the origin and conditions of the validity of Zipf’s law using the t...

Power Laws, Zipf’s Law, and Scaling Laws in Human Language and Music

Power-law distributions have been a paradigm of complex systems for several decades. But it has been only recently that attention has been devoted to the proper fitting and goodness-of-fit testing of these distributions; in particular, Clauset et al.’s method is widely cited in this regard [1]. In the first part of the talk we present evidence that this method fails in some concrete examples of...
